WebP vs PNG: The Efficiency War
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. It was designed to make the web faster by reducing file weight without sacrificing visual fidelity.
On average, WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. When using lossy compression, WebP can be up to 34% smaller than equivalent JPEGs at the same quality level. Smaller images mean faster page loads and less bandwidth consumption for users.
At Picverter, we recommend using WebP for 90% of web tasks. Use PNG only when you need absolute pixel perfection or transparency in legacy browsers that don't yet support WebP.
Safety of Local Browser-Side Processing
Traditional "cloud-based" image converters work by receiving your file on their server, processing it, and then sending it back. This creates a massive security risk: your images are stored on someone else's disk, where they could be analyzed, sold, or leaked.
Picverter works entirely in your browser tab. We use JavaScript and WebAssembly to do all the heavy lifting using your device's CPU and RAM. Your original photo never leaves your computer.
This approach eliminates the risk of server-side data leaks and ensures that once you close our website, your session is gone, and the data is wiped from your memory. It's the gold standard for digital privacy.
EXIF Metadata: Hidden Digital Footprints
Did you know every photo you take with your smartphone contains hidden data? This is called EXIF metadata. It stores your camera settings, the exact date, and often your precise GPS coordinates.
Sharing a photo on a forum or social media without cleaning this data can lead to unintended consequences, such as revealing your home address or current location. It's a significant security risk that many ignore.
Our tool includes a "Strip Metadata" feature. By enabling this, we visually replicate the image while discarding all hidden identifiers. You get a clean, safe file ready for sharing with the world, without compromising your privacy.
